Danube floods: flood action by the city of Vienna – Viennese waters | PID press

Routine action due to minor flooding – ban on bathing in the New Danube.

Vienna (OTS/RK) Due to the heavy precipitation of the last few days in the catchment area, the Danube has also been flooding in the Vienna area since today, Wednesday, May 17, for 2:00 p.m. The employees of the flood protection of the city of Vienna – Vienna waters are therefore on flood action. The flood control center in the intake structure in Langenzersdorf and the two other weirs 1 and 2 on the New Danube were manned at 2 p.m. today. The level of the Danube at the Korneuburg site, which is relevant for Vienna, will be around 5.60 m in the next few hours. However, the forecasts indicate that the level will not increase significantly and that the flood will be small and short-lived.

“Thanks to the New Danube and the Danube Island, Vienna’s Danube flood protection is prepared for a multiple of the forecast water volume,” reassured Gerald Loew, Head of the Vienna Waters Department (MA 45). “Today’s flood action is routine and is expected to end quickly. But even in the event of floods of the century, such as those that last occurred in 2002 and 2013, Vienna is well prepared and has not suffered any significant damage,” Loew continued.

New Danube: the heart of Vienna’s Danube flood protection

The central building block for flood protection in Vienna is the New Danube, which relieves the Danube when the water level is high. From a water level of 5.30 m on the Danube near Korneuburg, the weir fields of the intake structure are overflowed and the Danube floodwater initially flows into the New Danube without any action being taken. From a water level of 5.90 m, the weir fields are slowly opened and the flood water is drained off in a controlled manner.

Bathing ban for the New Danube

Due to the flow of the Danube water into the New Danube, a bathing ban for the New Danube is proclaimed for reasons of water hygiene. The bathing ban applies with immediate effect.

The two pontoon bridges over the New Danube, the Copa-Steg and the Waluliso Bridge, were already drawn in yesterday for flood protection reasons.
