Dansby Swanson reaches agreement with Cubs

Free agent shortstop Dansby Swanson is headed to the Cubs. The shortstop reached a seven-year, $177 million deal with Chicago, with a deal that includes a clause to veto any changes, sources told MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian.

Since the Braves’ season ended, the club’s biggest question mark was the fate of Swanson. There was some hope of a reunion between the two parties, but it is now clear that this will not be the case.

The 28-year-old shortstop was in an excellent position to capitalize on a contract on the open market following ranking second among all players at his position with a FanGraphs 6.4 WAR in 2022, trailing only Francisco. Mets’ Lindor (6.8).

Swanson’s offense has improved considerably over the past two seasons, establishing himself as one of the best players at his position. He hit a career-high 27 home runs in 2021 and ranked fourth among all major league shortstops with 25 guns last year.
