A new Danish study deconstructs preconceived ideas regarding cigarettes and reveals that smoking does not make you lose weight but can, on the contrary, increase the risk of developing abdominal fat.
The impact is greatest for visceral abdominal fat, which is not visible but is located around internal organs, the scientists found.
The study, led by the University of Copenhagen, combined results from different genetic studies to look for a causal relationship between smoking and increased abdominal fat.
“We also found that the type of fat that increases is more likely to be visceral fat than fat just under the skin. The influence of smoking on abdominal fat appears to occur independently of other factors such as socioeconomic status, alcohol consumption, ADHD, or a person’s degree of risk taking”said Dr German Carrasquilla, lead author of the study and professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
“From a public health perspective, these findings reinforce the importance of large-scale efforts to prevent and reduce smoking in the general population, as this may also help reduce abdominal visceral fat and all chronic diseases. which are linked to it”he added.
Data from more than two million people was included in the analysis and it was found that people with genes that made them prone to smoking were also prone to having belly fat.
