He is originally from Reunion Island, actor, director and a bit of an author. Between his island and France, he lives on stage according to the projects he creates or defends. With Reunion Creole as its standard. “L’Oreille est boldie” spoke with a passionate artist.

A little morning confusion regarding the appointment time but everything is fine: Daniel Léocadie is there, sitting in this little Parisian café, on the eve of his return to Reunion. He has just performed for a few days at Versailles in the play Marie Stuart, directed by Maryse Estier, and will return to France in December, to replay it for Nancy. Before that, it’s its own text Kisa mi juice which he proposed – among others – within the framework of the Mois Creole initiated by Chantal Loial.

The Reunionese actor-director likes to travel and fortunately: his job pushes him to go back and forth but he loves nothing more than creating and working at home in Reunion. It’s important, he will say throughout The Ear is boldto show the Reunion public that there is an imagination, a decorum, a language, rich to the point of being able to represent them on stage and to be proud of it.
Place des Outre-mer nestled in the heart of the French Republic, the strength of Creole and overseas languages, representation in the theater, so many subjects tackled head-on by Daniel Léocadie in The Ear is bolde :

Pour Kisa mi juice, Daniel Léocadie is willing to take on the role of author but it is not the exercise with which he is most familiar. Necessity is law, this text was born from hearing on the radio a grandfather who, expressing himself in the language, forbade his grandson from speaking Creole in his house. History that Creole does not “spoil” his French and with it, his chances of success in life.

It is once morest all this discrediting of the Reunion language that Daniel Léocadie wrote this text which he has tirelessly performed on stage for several years. Kisa mi juice it is the French part of a man who seeks to reunite with the Reunionese part of his identity that had been hidden from him. The character speaking is angry…

The complete opposite of Daniel Léocadie: he has never been angry. Nobody ever stopped him from speaking Creole. And he was even the one who taught his parents regarding French, which he learned at school and which he brought home proudly!

Since his return to Reunion Island a few years ago, following his theater studies in France, he has realized how much Creole has been stifled, strangled, devalued to the point where, even today, young people do not know handling French ruins all their chances of success!

This is why the actor and director decided to work first on setting up projects on site in which bilingualism has its place. Making Creole and the cultural elements constituting Reunion Island, integral parts of the shows he designs is a priority for him and bringing them together with classic texts, a real jubilation, to hear him tell how he reconciled Reunion Island and the ancient tragedy of Antigone.
