Former Arsenal youth academy player Daniel Cain became a quadriplegic following consuming a drink during a night out with friends in 2009, The Sun reports. Cain, who was also an industrial engineering student, suffered a cardiovascular problem with devastating secondary damage following consuming the drink.

Cain’s friends noticed that he had changed color and was unresponsive to their resuscitation attempts. An ambulance arrived at the scene of the incident to help the 23-year-old, who had gone into cardiac arrest. Despite the fact that the medical services managed to revive him following 24 minutes, his spinal cord and his brain were without oxygen for too long.

After more than two years since that episode, Cain needs 24-hour care. His family has established an account to raise funds for the ex-soccer player’s rehabilitation. Cain is currently undergoing treatment to walk once more on his own, which costs 2,200 euros per month.

Despite the difficulties he has faced, Cain has been getting better with time. His long-term memory still works, and his family hopes that he will continue to recover in the future.
