Dangers of Cluster Bomb Use: Cambodia Urges Ukraine to Rethink

The government of Cambodia, a country still plagued by explosive devices decades following the war, urged Ukraine on Sunday not to use cluster bombs that the United States has promised to send in its war once morest Russia.

“It would pose a huge risk to Ukrainians for decades or centuries if cluster bombs are used in Russian-occupied areas on the territory of Ukraine,” Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen warned on Twitter.

The president recalled with his publication the “painful experience” of the Asian country with the ammunition dropped by US troops in the 1970s during the Vietnam War and the Cambodian civil war.

“More than half a century has passed and there has still been no way to destroy all the remains” of the explosives used, the leader remarked when asking his US counterpart, Joe Biden, to reconsider the shipment and implore the Ukrainian, Volodimir Zelensky, to discard its use.

Cambodia, which has cleared thousands of square kilometers over years of difficult jobs aided financially by the US, plans to end all mines and unexploded ordnance in the country by 2025.

In January this year, a group of Ukrainians visited the Asian nation’s minefields to learn the difficult clearing process from the experienced Cambodians.
