The white dress with lace, a tulle skirt and a leg slit is already ready at home, only a few hours separate dancing couple Florentine Lorber and Frank Weber from their big performance at the Graz Opera Redoute on Saturday evening. “We’re here for the first time and we’re really excited,” they both agree. Now they have another reason to be happy: in the voting for the Kleine Zeitung’s most popular polonaise couple, the two emerged as winners. “Our music colleagues probably voted diligently for us,” suspect the 22-year-old and the 26-year-old, who come from southern Styria.

Weber grew up with the Leibnitz town band, he has been there since 2007, Lorber joined ten years later. “Music has accompanied me my whole life,” said the passionate drummer, who has also played with the state youth orchestra, in symphony orchestras and in the military band. Lorber says something similar: the transverse flute has always fascinated the young woman, who works at the Graz district court. “When I started, I was in second primary school, and even in kindergarten I really wanted to play the flute.” In the end, the band was also the reason why the two found each other on the dance floor; by chance, the music colleagues discovered their shared passion . “We are youth speakers at our band and wanted to organize something for the group, and it ended up being a dance course,” remembers Weber.

Three extra hours of waltz

A small decision that would have a lasting impact on both of their lives, because they now dance together regularly – just recently everything revolved around the boogie at their dance school in Tillmitsch. “That’s really cool because there are boogie elements in the choreography for the polonaise,” says Weber happily. The dancing couple came prepared for the casting in front of a prominent jury at the end of last year. “We took three extra individual lessons for the waltz,” smiles Weber – and the effort paid off.

As one of 52 dance couples, Lorber and Weber will officially open the evening at the Opernredoute. “At first we didn’t even think we’d be accepted because we still hadn’t heard anything two weeks following the casting, so we were even happier when we got the confirmation,” Lorber is still thrilled. “With the crown you really feel like a princess.” There is no trace of nervousness between the two of them. “While dancing you only hear the music and don’t think regarding anything else,” says Weber.

They never imagined that the two would emerge as winners in the voting. “But my mom posted a call to her WhatsApp status every day and I also pointed it out to my work colleagues at Anton Paar more often, so that probably helped too,” laughs Weber, who teaches “Cyber Security” at the Hagenberg University of Applied Sciences in Upper Austria. has studied. The band colleagues will follow the two’s performance on the screen, says Weber. “Luckily there is a live stream.”
