China News ServiceBeijing, July 16 (Reporter Gao Kai) The modern dance work “Disappearance”, choreographed and directed by dancer Hou Ying and performed by dancers from Hou Ying Dance Theater, will premiere at Beijing Tianqiao Art Center·Chinese Spring Art Festival. “Disappearance” is a dancer’s innovative thinking, which combines two very different body languages of modern dance and fencing.
Disappearing is commissioned by China Shanghai International Arts Festival, co-produced by Hou Ying Dance Theater and McaM Ming Contemporary Art Museum, and will premiere at Shanghai International Dance Center in October 2021. “Disappearance” is considered to be the first deep integration of modern dance and fencing. Fencing has been internalized into the body language and impact force of modern dance, broadening the connotation and aesthetic boundaries of modern dance. The spiritual reflection made by the artist, its creative consciousness transcends the artist’s subjective will, and achieves the creative process of “it will”. Literary and art critic Cheng Hui commented that “Disappearance” is an artificial alienation between inner wildness and civilization, and a real drama in the universe.

According to reports, the creative idea of ”Disappearance” was born in 2020. During the days at home, Hou Ying experienced the resonance of the human soul, which left traces on the physical and mental level. “These traces are not particularly clear now, and we can’t judge what they are, because we are still in them.” Hou Ying said that this strong sense of impact became the starting point and background of “Disappearance”.
Talking regarding the combination of modern dance and fencing, Hou Ying said that the appearance of fencing is almost an intuitive message. “A very unclear tearing and confrontation”, Hou Ying decided to follow her intuition and create works in an instinctive way, trying to strip and reconstruct social phenomena, starting from the body little by little to study the physical techniques of modern dance, how the mind and body consciousness is A fusion expression with highly skilled fencing.
For the creation of “Disappearance”, Hou Ying specially invited Tian Yuchuan, the former head coach of the women’s saber of the Beijing Fencing Team, and Liang Jiayue, a national first-level referee, to conduct professional fencing training for the dancers for half a year.
Fencing has a long history and is called “ballet in combat”. The requirements for explosive force and movement standard are similar to those of modern dance. After really learning the sport, Hou Ying and the dancers had a more profound experience. “I think the situation where fencers face off is like the relationship between people in our lives.” At the same time, the “mask” on the athletes’ faces in fencing also deeply attracted Hou Ying. The two faced each other wearing helmets and stabbed each other without being able to see each other’s faces. This made her see the unknown between people. The confrontation of the truth coincides with her perception.
“Disappearance” invited Austrian musician Cornelius Berkowitz as the composer and Dutch artist Kevin Polak to participate in the sound design. Hou Ying and Cornelius Berkowitz completed the fusion of music and dance, the choreographer arranged a dance, the musician gave a piece of music, and finally Re-synthesis, constantly colliding in communication, and constantly deepening the artistic conception of the work.
The realistic percussion and collision sound, exaggerated noise fricatives, overtones and electronic sounds, and the keynote of experimental music all give the work a soul-like support. “The metal sound of the collision of the swords was pleasant at first. At the moment before entering the fight, the harsh friction suddenly exaggerated, penetrated the eardrum, penetrated the body, and made the nerves spasm.” The music of “Disappearance” and The sound design is undoubtedly stunning, and the hoarse, sharp, and solemn electronic music makes accurate sound annotations for this work: this must not be the last human trembling regarding “existence”.
In “Disappearance”, the audience will hear tense and rich and varied voices, and will also see the actors wearing masks and sabres on the stage, both dancing and fighting, and the final image is that the dancers “set foot on the ground” “Seesaw” walks slowly, showing a kind of tension-integrated body movement and sound reciprocation throughout the whole process. The tense sound impacts dissonance in harmony; “Mask” implies truth and falsehood and disguise; “Seesaw” indicates the contest between the two Check and balance. All these familiar objects, new body language, and aware modern dancers and confrontational fencers add up to a grim, complex, thought-provoking world.
It is reported that on July 27, the modern dance work “Disappearance” will be presented at the Beijing Tianqiao Art Center. (Finish)
