This summer evening, the hall of the Maison de la danse de Lyon is full. On display, Partitions d’instinctsby choreographer and dancer Louis Combeaud. Dressed in black and white, around ten dancers form a line, then advance slowly, to music by Laurie Anderson.
Among them, young people aged 18 to 25, followed after a first psychotic episode, but also a sister, a best friend and four caregivers, including three nurse “case managers” (referent staff) and the psychiatrist Emmanuel Monneron, responsible for the part-time therapeutic reception center of the Center pole, at Le Vinatier hospital, in Bron (Rhône). Since 2017, he has organized “Dance and mental health” projects with the Maison de la danse de Lyon.
“It’s about offering caregivers and patients the opportunity to participate in a collective, highly civic adventure, where everyone has their place”describes Emmanuel Monneron, also a dancer and choreographer. “When we take part in a project that leads us to discover shows, share with other people, express ourselves, take a place on stage in front of an audience, we contribute to the life of a communitycontinues the psychiatrist. Everyone is there as dancers. It is an inclusive project which also aims to fight against discrimination. »
Improvisations and letting go
His previous collaboration with Canadian choreographer Ariane Boulet resulted in a medium-length film released in 2023, Insideby Claire Juge. Partitions d’instincts is the subject of a documentary signed by director Pierre Schonbrodt which will be broadcast on Belgian television, RTBF, on December 1, 2024.
Here, the young people were taken care of by the PEP’S teams (Structured intervention program for first episodes of psychosis), with follow-up lasting three years. In France, at least 15,000 young people suffer a psychotic episode each year, according to the psychiatry & neurosciences university hospital group in Paris. It is characterized by a loss of contact with reality, the duration of which can vary, with symptoms such as hallucinations, loss of desire, disorganization… and which affects thoughts, emotions and behavior.

During one of the rehearsals preceding the show, at which The World attended – they lasted a year –, in groups of two or three, some are invited to close their eyes, the others make them move, then the roles are reversed. The bodies unfold little by little on the Mother was standingby Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, and indulge in improvisations.
