Damaged ship with explosive cargo headed for Skagerrak

On 2 September, the ship was thrown out of the port of Tromsø in Norway, where it had sought emergency harbor the week before due to a damaged screw, a damaged rudder and cracks in the hull. That’s what Danwatch writes.

The Norwegian authorities wrote in a press release the following day that they chose to reject the ship, as they did not want the repairs to be carried out close to the city of Tromsø.

According to Danwatch, the ship has a cargo of 20,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate from Russia. According to the media, it is the same type of material that caused the violent explosion in Beirut in 2020 – the largest man-made non-nuclear explosion ever.

The difference is just that the ship Ruby has seven times more ammonium nitrate on board.

Danwatch and Information have received confirmation from the Danish Maritime Authority that the ship is on its way to the Great Belt and is expected to arrive before the weekend, as the ship has applied for permission to dock in Klaipeda in Lithuania.

The ship’s sailing schedule is to arrive in Klaipeda on Sunday 22 September with a route through the Kattegat, the Great Belt and further into the Baltic Sea.

It must therefore be expected that the ship with explosive goods will pass east of Læsø during the coming day.

According to Danwatch and Information, Ruby has not ordered a pilot to sail through Denmark. A pilot is a specialized navigator with in-depth knowledge of the shallow and narrow Danish straits.

Their presence can prevent accidents like grounding, which Ruby has already experienced on her route.

Ruby will be accompanied by the vessel “Amber II”, also sailing under the Maltese flag as a type of tug.
