Dallas Mavericks Secure Grant Williams in Sign-and-Trade Deal: Latest NBA Trade Updates

The Dallas Mavericks will secure the rights to Grant Williams in a sign-and-trade deal. The forward comes from the Boston Celtics. Matisse Thybulle might also join the Texans in the near future.

As Adrian Wojnarowski (ESPN) reports, the Mavs are threading a three-team trade to lure Williams to Dallas. The 24-year-old is a restricted free agent but the Mavs opted to take Williams via sign-and-trade route. In return, they give Reggie Bullock and a pick swap (2030) to the San Antonio Spurs. In return, both Boston and Dallas will each receive two second-round picks from the Spurs.

Williams will sign a four-year, $53 million deal in Dallas. The winger averaged 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds for the Celtics last year, converting 39.5 percent of his three-pointers. The beefy forward is considered a 3-and-D specialist and can also play small ball center if necessary. He’s also an expert from around the corner, which should come into its own alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Since the Mavs took Williams by sign-and-trade, the Mavs still have the full midlevel exception available. The Mavs are at 14 players, one roster spot is still free. Other newcomers so far have been Seth Curry, Dante Exum, Richaun Holmes and the two rookies Olivier-Maxence Prosper and center Dereck Lively II.

Dallas Mavericks: Trail Blazers follow suit with offer for Thybulle

The Mavericks looked to expand further on the wing with a three-year, $33 million deal for Matisse Thybulle, which Thybulle had already agreed to. However, as might be expected with a restricted free agent like Thybulle, the Portland Trail Blazers thwarted the Mavs and went along with the offer, leaving Thybulle in control of Portland for three years.

Over the course of his career, the Australian averaged 1.5 steals and 0.8 blocks in just over 20 minutes per game. The problem is the offense, however, because Thybulle doesn’t have a good throw. In 267 games, the forward scored just 4.6 points per game and converted just 33.4 percent of his total of 592 three-pointers.
