There was no time for a break for participants in the Dakar Rally on Sunday. After the rest day in Riyadh, the drivers had to complete the longest stage of this year’s edition of the world’s toughest rally on Sunday. While Adrien Van Beveren had to open the seventh stage and lost a lot of time, his Honda teammate Nacho Cornejo managed to celebrate his third day win this year.
The Chilean prevailed with a lead of 32 seconds over Red Bull KTM factory rider Kevin Benavides and rode just over three minutes faster than Husqvarna star Luciano Benavides, who secured third place. Hero factory driver Ross Branch crossed the finish line in Al Duwadimi in 6:36 minutes in fourth position.
Van Beveren, Toby Price (KTM) and Honda star Ricky Brabec found themselves as a trio at the front of the field over the course of the day, which is why they also received a few bonus minutes credited to their account. With almost four bonus minutes, the American defended his overall Dakar lead with a minimalist lead of one second.
Brabec is therefore just ahead of Branch, five stages before the finish on Friday. Overall, Cornejo passed Van Beveren once more and is in third place following Sunday (+6:48 minutes), the Frenchman is in fourth place, more than 14 minutes behind.
The four remaining works drivers from Pierer Mobility AG follow in places 5 to 8. Kevin Benavides is fifth ahead of Toby Price (KTM), GASGAS driver Daniel Sanders and Luciano Benavides. As KTM privateers, Stefan Svitko and Martin Michek are in 9th and 10th place in the overall Dakar rankings.
