Daimler Truck North America is bringing on board researchers from Oregon State University to work on a fuel cell-powered heavy-duty truck for regional and long-distance haulage. This should have a range of 600 miles – the equivalent of around 965 kilometers.

The tractor to be developed as part of the Daimler project should enable this range without sacrificing payload thanks to new power electronics, motors and energy management tools. The project team is also aiming for a fuel cell service life of 25,000 hours for the heavyweight. Further technical precisions are not known at the moment.

The initial phases of the project will include technology modeling, an analysis phase, concept selection and design, according to a statement from Oregon State University. In later phases, a corresponding H2 truck will be built and tested under highway conditions. The partners do not give a concrete timetable. The University of Oregon wants to contribute to the success of the project with its experts in the fields of electric drives and artificial intelligence, among other things.

The US Department of Energy (DoE) has already awarded Daimler Truck North America – whose headquarters are in Portland – a grant of 2021 as part of the SuperTruck 3 program $25.8 million committed to the project. This is part of a $199 million package to fund 25 projects, all aimed at putting cleaner cars and trucks on America’s roads and improving charging infrastructure. Daimler Truck had already been involved in the predecessor programs SuperTruck 2 and SuperTruck 1.

“Through the DoE’s SuperTruck 3 program, we can research high-risk and high-reward technologies more quickly in order to clear the technical path for their development and possible integration into series production – for the mutual benefit of our environment and our society,” read a key statement from the company headquarters at the time.
