And if the practice became part of the mores? Daily carpooling has accelerated with the 100 euro bonus announced at the end of 2022, according to figures released by the government on Thursday. As of July 1, 2023, 130,000 new drivers had made journeys recorded on carpooling platforms.
The number of journeys thus doubled over the first six months of the year, compared to the beginning of 2022: more than 5 million journeys were recorded by the platforms, for an estimated saving of 7.7 million liters of oil.
“It’s very good, but we consumed 20 billion liters over the semester,” said Minister of Energy Transition Agnès Pannier-Runacher, during a meeting to monitor the system. “We can do better! »
Another drop of water in transport
The popular journeys take place in Île-de-France and around Rouen in particular, but also between Annecy and Switzerland, or between Nice and Monaco, according to the Carpooling Observatory. While this form of organized hitchhiking now represents 3% of long-distance journeys, its daily practice remains a drop in the bucket in transport (0.01% according to BlaBlaCar).
The platforms record less than 40,000 journeys per day on average (declared, because many journeys are also informal), for 100 million journeys made by car every day in France, to get to or from work, take children to school, etc. school or run errands.
Thousands of fraud cases
The Ministries of Ecological Transition, Energy Transition and Transport announced in December that motorists who would start carpooling in 2023 might benefit from a bonus of 100 euros, as part of a plan of 150 million euros. euros in total. A few thousand cases of fraud have already been identified, such as people making the same journey with accounts opened on two laptops.
The government has since put in place a “fighting plan”, with a strengthening of the identification of carpoolers or campaigns to ban fraudsters on the platforms. These actions will be further reinforced in the coming months, according to the ministries. A “charter” was also launched Thursday for companies in favor of carpooling, already signed by La Poste, Carrefour or Les Mousquetaires.
Objective: 3 million daily trips
The very ambitious objective of this “carpooling plan” is to eventually reach three million daily journeys, which would enable France to avoid 1% of its greenhouse gas emissions. “The whole challenge is to achieve a density that makes it possible to find several journeys per day to the same destination”, underlined Nicolas Brusson of BlaBlaCar.
“Awareness of the plan is still low,” he added. The plan is very young, we are at the start of the marathon”. A new communication campaign will be launched by the ministries concerned at the start of the school year in September.
