I’m far from the only one who thinks The Lord of the Rings: Gollum clearly has no chance in today’s market, but it’s never fun to see developers apologize for the state of their games. Business failures are even worse, and we got an example of that today. Games Wirtschaft was the first to report Daedalic Entertainment’s decision to shut down its development division to focus on publishing games, laying off 25 employees as a result. A Daedalic representative has now confirmed this in an email to me, noting that part of the reason is that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has failed to live up to the company’s expectations. We’ll still get the promised patches, but it’s all regarding the release. It also means that another Lord of the Rings game we’ve heard has been canceled, so the next big game we’ll see in the universe is either an Amazon MMO or an unannounced one from the ambitious Embracer Group.
