“Dads with Rum”, the legendary new Greek comedy by Thanasis Papathanasiou and Michalis Reppa, with consecutive sold outs and killer humor, will also be presented in Aegio on Sunday, August 11 at 9:15 p.m. at the “Georgios Pappas” outdoor theater.
But what are “Fathers” after all?
It is a sharp satire, which was presented for the first time in 1996 and satirizes Greek society. A society that even today continues to be unfortunately bigger than itself, “smaller” in its behavior, greedy, racist, offensive in all its manifestations.
Of course a lot has happened since then. A new millennium has dawned and a new reality has settled among us. Upheavals, canceled plans, countless new social media, life redefinitions and a whole lot of chaos.
The change in class identity that many people sought began to cause losses instead of gains. Houses were “closed”, chain stores suffocated their owners. But the non-existent authorities remained just as stable and perhaps even more criminal. The term “crisis of conscience” is not often heard. The “crisis” remained pure.
The story of the 5 stupid, misfits and desperate cleaners of the show is in our time a banal everyday life. Roi, Vesca, Panagiotis, Djeni, Christos and Mrs. Vasso are now persons who belong to the realm of realism, after they jumped out of the pages of the play. They are moving crimes that we meet and greet every day, unsuspecting of what they might be hiding “in their kitchen”.
And what are these stupid bastards up to anyway?
They serve some wonderful “Dads with rum” with a little bit of poison and …whoever takes the chance. The four million that the father had won in the joker – who has now left this vain world – are looking for their heir. Two sons, two daughters-in-law, a bright know-it-all neighbor and a nightmarish nurse talk, argue, plot and sleep peacefully while weaving a sweet plan of mutual annihilation.
“Rum Dads” 2024. Who will run out alive to take the fortune? It remains to be seen.
