The main political formation of the South African opposition, the Democratic Alliance (DA), announced on Tuesday that it had introduced a file with the International Criminal Court (ICC) so that this body obliges Pretoria to arrest the leader of the Russian state, Vladimir Putin, in case he appears at the next BRICS summit, which will take place in the southern African country.

Last March, the ICC issued an international arrest warrant once morest the master of the Kremlin, who should take part in the BRICS summit which will take place in Johannesburg at the end of August.

“President Putin is accused by the ICC of being responsible for the war crimes of illegal deportation of children and illegal transfer of children from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation, under Articles 8 (2)(a)(VII) and 8(2)(b)(VIII) of the Rome Statute,” the DA recalled in a statement.

The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergey Lavrov, will be among the ministers who will take part in the meeting of BRICS foreign ministers, which will take place at the beginning of June in Cape Town.

Russia is a major ally of South Africa, these two states being part of the BRICS, an informal group of countries with emerging economies of which Brazil, India and China are also members.
