Standard’s Narrow Escape: A Comedy of Errors and Triumph

The beautiful game, they say, is rarely simple. And if today’s play between Standard Liège and Sint-Truiden did anything, it was to send fans on an emotional rollercoaster that would make even the best theme park look tame! Yes, folks, Standard won 2-1, but let’s just say they were moments away from sending their supporters into a collective cardiac arrest.

First Half: A Tame Roar

The Rouches started the match like an overzealous puppy – all bark and no bite. Within the first minute, Isaac Price and Aiden O’Neill managed to shoot the ball like they were trying to score goals in a game of pinball, with nothing to show for it but a few confused glances. It took half an hour, but finally, Andi Zeqiri channeled his inner dolphin, leaping above the defense with a header that found its way past Léo Kokubo. Sclessin erupted with joy – and confusion, as if they’d just experienced an unexpected magic trick!

But the drama didn’t stop there! Just before half-time, VAR entered the scene like a dramatic soap opera twist. A penalty was awarded to Standard, and Zeqiri stepped up again, converting it with all the finesse of a seasoned magician — making it 2-0 and leaving Sint-Truiden fans feeling a bit like they had just been pickpocketed at a carnival fair.

Second Half: A Comedy of Near Misses

Can you imagine watching your favorite sitcom and then suddenly the plot thickens? That’s exactly what happened in the second half. Olivier Dumont, a name from the past, made his presence known by scoring for Sint-Truiden with a curler that had more bend than a pretzel! Cue the anxious gasps from the Standard fans… because 2-1 meant they now had a nail-biting finish on their hands!

Just minutes later, Andrés Ferrari almost gave them a heart attack. His shot was so spectacular it resembled the final moments of a thrilling finale – forcing Matthieu Epolo to make a diving save that had all the flair of a Hollywood stunt double. And then… can you believe it? Dumont hit the post! The stadium echoed with a collective ‘NOOO!’ as time seemed to slow down, and memories of near misses came flooding back.

A Last-Minute Twist

Then came the icing on the chaotic cake. In the dying moments, a massive blunder by Epolo almost turned the tide dramatically. It was as if he’d put on clown shoes instead of cleats! A lack of composure allowed Bertaccini to chance a too-close-for-comfort equalizer, which was then bizarrely ruled offside by VAR. Cue the pure disbelief on the faces of the Sint-Truiden fans – a moment that could have led to immediate therapy sessions!

The Final Whistle and the Aftermath

In the end, Standard kicked off with three points, moving up to 7th in the standings, while Sint-Truiden lingers in 13th. A victory, yes, but a reminder that in football, nothing is ever predictable. Even a 2-1 lead could feel like holding onto a live wire—thrilling and terrifying!

So, dear readers, whether you live and die by the glory of your team or you simply tune in for the dramatic mishaps, today was a resounding reminder: In the game of football, expect the unexpected. Cheers to the Rouches for surviving another day – and for reminding us that sometimes, football is a lot like a sitcom: a little over the top, but entertaining nonetheless!

Clearly, nothing is ever really simple in Standard. The Rouches won 2-1 but came very close to disaster this afternoon against Sint-Truiden.

The Liégeois quickly took control of the match, but Isaac Price (5th) and Aiden O’Neill (6th) lacked precision in their first shots. We had to wait half an hour to see Sclessin explode. On a cross from O’Neill in the rectangle, Andi Zeqiri dove to overtake his defender, cut the trajectory of the ball and deceive Léo Kokubo (34th, 1-0). Not in a bad position, the Rouches were still surprised by a nice combination from Saint-Trond on the counter, but Adriano Bertaccini’s shot was crushed and ended up on Matthieu Epolo. Just before the break, Standard managed to make the break thanks to a penalty awarded thanks to VAR and converted by Zeqiri (45th, 2-0).

In the second half, it took a shot into the top corner from Olivier Dumont, formerly of Maison Rouche, to restart the match (70th, 2-1). A few minutes later, it was Andrés Ferrari who gave Sclessin a cold sweat, with a spectacular return which forced Epolo to dive (76th), before Dumont hit the post (88th). Saint-Trond thought of equalizing in the 90th minute by taking advantage of a huge blunder by Epolo in front of Bertaccini, but the VAR saved the Liégeois by signaling an offside by the Trudonnaire striker.

In the standings, this victory allows Standard to temporarily move up to 7th (18 points). Sint-Truiden remains 13th (14 points).

Highlights of the meeting:

Standard entered the match very well. After only 4 minutes, a nice combination between Fossey and Price on the right flank brought the first chance of the game. But the Northern Irishman’s shot missed.

The Liégeois concluded their great period of domination by opening the score at the half-hour mark. O’Neill received the ball on the right flank and delivered a magnificent cross into the second zone. Zeqiri passed the defender and opened the scoring.

7 minutes later, Sint-Truiden created a big chance of coming back to score. On a quick reconversion, Bertaccini was in a very good position but it took a good intervention from Epolo to prevent the Canaries from equalizing.

What a save from Kokubo to keep Sint-Truiden in the match. 5 minutes before the break, Sotiris recovered the ball at the edge of the area, played with two players before unleashing a magnificent strike. The Japanese goalkeeper intervened perfectly.

After this strike from Sotiris, a penalty was finally awarded to Liege for a foul on Ayensa, after intervention by the VAR. Zeqiri took charge of transforming it and scored a double to make the break.

Standard’s first real error in this match in the 70th minute. Lawrence received a complicated ball from Camara behind. Instead of clearing the ball, the Briton tried to play clean. He lost the leather to Patris. In a nice triangle game, Dumont received the ball at the entrance to the rectangle. He finished with a nice shot into the top corner.

What a huge blunder from Epolo in injury time. The goalkeeper completely failed by trying to kick the ball rather than catching it. Bertaccini passed by, pressed the goalkeeper and equalized. The goal was ultimately ruled out for offside.
