Louisiana’s Mike Johnson, a staunch ally of ex-President Trump, who led a legal effort to overturn the results of the 2020 US presidential election, won the unanimous approval of his Republican Party to end weeks of chaos as the new speaker of the US House of Representatives.

He is the fourth Republican nominated by his party in as many weeks to replace ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, but the only one with sufficient support in the US House of Representatives.

“This House Republican majority is united,” Johnson told reporters as colleagues cheered and applauded after his appointment as the new speaker.

It is likely that the fact that he is a little-known politician contributed to Mr. Johnson’s success. The 51-year-old lawyer and defender of religious rights has no opponents among Republicans. The attempts of other candidates to be elected to the post of chairman failed precisely because of internal disagreements.

He was far from his party’s first choice, but he was able to capitalize on the desperation of lawmakers and break the US House of Representatives out of weeks of gridlock.

“I haven’t heard a single negative comment about him. Everyone likes him, everyone respects him (…) he is a person who will be really impressive and maybe for many years,” D. Trump said before the vote.

The Speaker of the US House of Representatives names a resolution in support of Israel as his first order of business

The new Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mr. Johnson, told lawmakers on Wednesday that his first act as leader of the House will be to pass a resolution supporting Israel in its conflict with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

“The first bill I will bring to this House in some time will be to support our dear, dear friend Israel, and we are overdue for that,” he said in his acceptance speech.
