D. Cameron: I have no doubt that V. Putin will lose

“Britain and France have strongly supported Ukraine and we will continue to support it to the extent necessary,” Cameron said after talks in Paris with his French counterpart Catherine Colonna.

“I have no doubt that we can ensure that V. Putin loses, and it is very important that he loses,” added the head of British diplomacy.

His comments came amid growing fears in Kyiv of waning Western support for Ukraine in the nearly two-year-old war launched by Russia.

“We must firmly support Ukraine,” said D. Cameron.

The White House warned on Monday that the United States had approved funding for only one more aid package for Ukraine this year and that new aid packages would need to be approved by Congress after that.

After stressing that the West must honor its commitments to Ukraine, D. Cameron equated the fight against the Russian invasion to a multi-act play.

“The first step was Russia’s stunning failure to achieve its objectives” in the initial stages of the invasion, the foreign secretary said.

“The second act was the brilliance of the Ukrainians, which they showed in pushing back the Russians (…) and of course the third act on land was more difficult,” he said, probably referring to the fact that the Ukrainian counter-offensive did not produce the results expected.

Mr Cameron added that “the fourth act has not been written yet and we have to make sure we get it right”.

At the meeting, Paris and London indicated that even after Brexit, their positions on many issues, including Ukraine and the Middle East, coincide.

“Our two countries have worked shoulder to shoulder from the beginning to ensure that Russian aggression is not rewarded, that it is doomed to failure, and that Ukraine can regain its freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Colonna said.

“We hope that this cooperation can be further strengthened,” she added.
