Czech government officials revealed that they will temporarily re-impose border controls with Slovakia next Thursday due to an increase in illegal immigration.
Interior Minister Vit Rakosan told a news conference that illegal immigration, mostly from Syria, had risen 1,200% this year.
“What we are going through this year is unprecedented. Since the beginning of 2022, the police have arrested 11,000 illegal immigrants,” Rakosan added.
“This is transit migration, as the vast majority are aimed at Germany. This has raised tension on the German side of the border as well,” he said.
Rakosan said border controls would initially last for 10 days.
