Injury, potential contamination and dose reduction: these are the risks associated with a possible crack in the vial of a cystic fibrosis drug that is being recalled by Health Canada.
In all, two batches of the drug Cayston, used for the treatment of chronic infections in patients with cystic fibrosis, are affected by the recall, namely 032168 and 033357.
There would be a “risk of the glass vials cracking, which might introduce glass particles into the medicine. A cracked glass vial may cause potential injury or lead to potential contamination or dose reduction,” the agency said.
Contamination of the drug might cause very serious complications in people already weakened by the disease.
Anyone with a vial that matches one of the affected lots is urged to contact their pharmacist to obtain a replacement product and return the affected product for proper disposal.
