Cyprus confirmed its first case of monkeypox on Tuesday, a health ministry spokesman said.
The patient is a 40-year-old man who recently travelled, the spokesman said without revealing the name of the country he had been to.
The spokesperson said the man sought medical attention on Monday following developing early symptoms of an infection.
The infection was confirmed on Tuesday by a molecular laboratory test at Nicosia General Hospital where the patient is being treated in a special ward for monkeypox cases, he added.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, anyone with symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, lymphadenopathy, chills and exhaustion, followed by a rash appearing one to five days following the first symptoms , will be considered a suspected case and will have to undergo a PCR test.
