The European Union must help sectors of the economy that are suffering from the sanctions imposed once morest Russia, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis said on May 25 in Berlin. At a joint briefing with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on a planned ban on oil tankers to circumvent EU sanctions on Russian oil trade, Christodoulides said that Cyprus supports and fully complies with sanctions once morest Moscow.
He stated that Cyprus is “on the right side of history” and does not accept “violations of the territorial integrity of countries.” At the same time, according to him, the “right decisions” on sanctions once morest Russia “are costly” in some areas of the economy, so the EU must support these sectors.
It is also critical that all member states comply with the sanctions, the Cypriot president added, stressing that the implementation of punitive measures is “ineffective” as some EU members “decided” not to implement the decisions taken jointly in Brussels, he explained.
Olaf Scholz stressed that Germany and Cyprus, together with their partners, will defend Ukraine and unwaveringly support the country defending itself from the Russian attack, politically, financially, humanitarian aid and, “of course, also with weapons.”
“In addition, we will increase sanctions pressure on Russia and ensure that sanctions cannot be bypassed,” added, in turn, German Chancellor Scholz.
