Danish cyclist Jonas Weingard, winner of the 2022 and 2023 Tour de France, suffered lung damage after a horrific accident he suffered while participating in the Basque Tour, according to what his Visma-Les team announced.
His team said: “New tests at the hospital revealed that he was suffering from pulmonary contusion and collapsed lungs.”
The 27-year-old was transported on a stretcher with a neck brace and a respiratory device, before it became clear in the hospital that he had suffered fractures in his collarbone and several ribs.
“His condition is stable and he slept well. He will remain in the hospital,” Visma-Leis added.
The accident occurred about thirty kilometers from the end of the fourth stage, which was scheduled between Echarri Aranas and Logotio.
During the downhill slope of the stage, several riders slipped and collided with stone blocks and a concrete drain.
Among the eight riders who fell in this accident, Australian Jay Fine remained motionless for the longest period before he was treated by emergency services, in preparation for his transfer to the hospital.
The UAE team announced that “he is conscious and able to speak.”
Slovenian Primoz Roglic and Belgian Remco Evenepoel were also injured and were able to stand up, but their teams Bora-Hansgrohe and Soudal Quick-Step respectively announced their withdrawal.
Evenepoel suffered a fracture in both his collarbone and his right shoulder, according to what his team announced in a statement that said, “Remco will return to Belgium, where he will undergo surgery to treat a broken collarbone and undergo further examinations at Herenthals Hospital.”
Belgian Wout van Aart suffered similar injuries last week in another accident during the Tour of Flanders.
Roglic, who also fell on Wednesday, was in the third stage, but he recovered quickly, leading Evenepoel by seven seconds before the start of the race on Thursday.
Danish Matthias Skilmoz became the new leader, four seconds behind Spaniard Juan Ayuso.
The penultimate fifth stage extends 175.9 km from Victoria-Vastis and Amorebieta-Itsano.
