The driver of the van who hit him before fleeing has been placed under an arrest warrant, said the East Flanders prosecutor’s office.
The accident occurred when a group of cyclists wanted to cross a national road with four traffic lanes (N60). A van then hit one of them. The 54-year-old victim, the president of the cycling club in question, had been taken to hospital in critical condition.
Hit and run under the influence
Witnesses said the driver of the van was traveling at high speed and ignored flaggers accompanying cyclists. He committed a hit and run, but members of the club were able to take down his license plate. The 25-year-old man eventually turned himself in to police and was tested for alcohol and drugs, which came back positive and negative respectively.
The prosecution appointed a traffic expert to investigate the circumstances of the accident. “According to initial findings, the driver of the van was performing an overtaking maneuver from the first to the second lane, then hit the victim,” said the prosecution.
Placed under arrest warrant
The man was placed under arrest warrant by the Oudenaarde investigating judge. He is suspected of manslaughter by lack of foresight, hit and run and driving under the influence.
