The world road championships, which start on Sunday in Australia, mark the start of the final phase of the 2022 cycling season. Swiss Cycling can hope to win several medals, starting on Sunday thanks to Stefan Bissegger, Stefan Küng and Marlen Reusser in the time trials.
A month ago, at the Europeans in Munich, the Swiss specialists managed a brilliant performance. Reusser first defended his timed title despite a disturbed preparation. Shortly following, Stefan from Thurgau – Bissegger with a very narrow lead of 0.32 over Küng following 24 km – ensured a historic Swiss double.
The coronation for Reusser?
The trio therefore displays legitimate ambitions in Wollongong. For Reusser – twice European champion, twice world vice-champion and 2021 Olympic vice-champion in the time trial – a triumph in Australia would be the crowning achievement of her career.
Küng and Bissegger do not have the same track record as Reusser. Since 2013, when quadruple world champion Fabian Cancellara won his last world medal (in bronze), only Küng has been on the podium. The Thurgovian finished 3rd in 2020 at Imola.
For his part, Bissegger lived following his European coronation “a turbulent time with many tributes and congratulations“. But he is also ready to fight on Sunday.
