Eddie Dunbar won stage 11 of the Tour around the town of Padron with a stunning acceleration in the final. Overall leader Ben O’Connor was more than 30 seconds behind Roglic but retained his title.

It’s simply malicious. Around 10 riders are still in contention for victory on stage 11 of the Vuelta a España around the town of Padron, which also climbs up to Puerto Aguasantas twice during the day. After the red flames passed, everyone looked at each other, trying to decide when it was time to step on the pedal. When no one tried to take the risk, fearful of shouting too fast, Eddie Dunbar erupted from behind and caught everyone from behind. One, two, and three pedal presses later, the Irishman extended his lead. It was enough to lead and believe in victory, while the companions behind looked at each other and decided whether to launch a pursuit. They may have started seconds later, but the Jayco-AlUla rider was far enough away to admire his stroke of genius and his panache as he was part of a breakaway 95 kilometers from the finish. Two seconds later, Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Max Poole (DSM-Firmenich-PostNL) were the next to pass through the arch.

O’Connor holds on but loses time

Eddie Dunbar would like to thank his teammate Filippo Zana who really helped him in the final kilometers. Guillaume Martin was last in the leading group, finishing 14th, 4 seconds behind his fellow compatriots who broke through. Stage 11 could also prove tricky for current overall leader Ben O’Connor. Indeed! Behind the leader Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora), the Australian runner-up, attacked at the port of Crussels, the final crux of the route. The Slovenian was hoping to beat the other favorites in the tournament, but Enrique Maas (Movistar) and others managed to return. Everyone except Ben O’Connor. The leader of the Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale came to a halt while pedaling. Fortunately for him, future driver Jayco AlUla was able to rely on the support of his teammates to limit the damage and give Roglic and company “just” 37 seconds. The Australian still leads by 3 feet 16 seconds.
