Winner of the Giro in 2023 but absent this year, Primoz Roglic could see himself returning to the Tour of Italy next year, especially as one stage could pass through Slovenia.
He concluded the season with two retirements in the Italian semi-classics last week, not feeling capable of defending his chances in the Tour of Lombardy. But Primoz Roglic is already looking towards the 2025 season. The Slovenian rider, who will celebrate his 35th birthday at the end of the month, is still under contract with Red Bull – Bora Hansgrohe for one season, and he could see himself winning a second jersey pink. Winner of the Giro last year, but absent this year because he preferred to concentrate on the Tour de France (which he finally abandoned on the evening of the 12th stage), Roglic told a charity event in Slovenia that he would like to race the Giro next year, particularly because rumors indicate that a stage will pass through Nova Gorica, a Slovenian town located a few kilometers from the Italian border. It is precisely in this city that he ran 60 kilometers this weekend with 400 fans, and raised 50,000 euros for his Foundation, which works to promote the development of cycling among primary school children. “We can only imagine what it will be like here when the Giro arrives, given what we experienced today,” he enthused. Before joking: “I will choose races where Tadej will not be there. We still have to agree on that.”
A Giro sans Pogacar, a priori
Tadej Pogacar should skip the Giro next year, in order to concentrate on a possible fourth victory in the Tour de France, and why not a first success in the Vuelta in the process. The Tour of Spain has become Roglic’s preserve, with four victories and a third place on the last six occasions. But will he want to face his illustrious compatriot, who crushed the competition in 2024? And will he want to compete in a seventh Tour de France, after having retired from his last three appearances? Everything seems to agree for him to give priority to the Giro in 2025. Primoz Roglic and his Red Bull – Bora Hansgrohe team, which also includes riders like Jai Hindley, Aleksandr Vlasov and Dani Martinez for the Grand Tours, will decide their program for the coming season in the coming weeks.
