The pedaler from Chillán, only 13 years old, Benjamín Torres, won the silver medal in the 4th National Junior Road Championship, held in Casablanca over the weekend, in the long-distance and individual time trial events and with the bronze in the team time trial.

The promise of the Ñuble pedal and triple national medalist, a student at the Liceo Bicentenario de San Nicolás, ran for the Squola Bici Mahuida club in Curicó, where he had been based since January preparing for the event.

His arrival at the club, the cradle of Chilean cycling, occurred when the coaches and former renowned pedalers of the Chilean National Team, who marked an era in Chile, Marcos Arriagada and RIchard Rodríguez, detected him and convinced him to go to the land of the cakes to enhance the Curicano club.

Previously, in Chillán, he was trained by the experienced peladero, who shone in the 90’s and 2000’s, racing for Team Líder, Juan Fierro, in a program coordinated by Manuel Cartes.

Benjamín Torres not only shows skills as a time trialist and distance runner, but also, since last year he began running track events in a velodrome and has already added a competition in Peñalolén.

“I was a triple national medalist in Casablanca, winning second place in the individual time trial and the long distance trial and I was third in the intermediate time trial where I earned a place on the team. In the time trial I felt good, at a good pace. In the youth gran fondo I felt a little tired from the days of competition, but I felt good at the end with good feelings,” says Torres, on the way to Chillán from Casablanca.

New challenges

After his great achievement in the Fifth Region, Benjamín reveals his next challenges.

“Now my goals are the School Sports Games and the National Track Championship that takes place in Santiago, at the Peñalolén Velodrome. My goal is to get a medal,” says the new promise of cycling from the Ñuble Region, who is grateful for the support of his coaches and her family.

“I want to thank my teachers. Marcos Arriagada and Richard Rodríguez who were always there and gave me confidence. They went to look for me at the club, despite being far away. And those are very appreciated. I also thank my family who has supported me at all times. In very difficult situations and he has always been by my side to support me,” stated the 13-year-old cyclist, who was a triple national medalist in the competition held in Casablanca.
