Clearly stronger than everyone, Mathieu Van der Poel won the 121st Paris-Roubaix in history. The world champion goes a little further into history.

Great favorite in his own succession, Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) crushed the 121st Paris-Roubaix in history. Stronger than the competition, the world champion left everyone behind 60 kilometers from the finish, in Orchies. Previously, he had already skimmed the front of the race with the benefit of a crazy acceleration in the legendary Arenberg gap where only three men were able to follow him, including Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek). After isolating itself at the front, “MDVP” then continued to increase its lead until the Roubaix velodrome. Alone in the world, he was three minutes ahead of his runner-up.

Like last year, Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) took second place in the sprint ahead of Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates). Behind this trio, Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) took 5th place (+3:15). The first Frenchman is far behind. Christophe Laporte ranked 22nd (+6:28). But the main thing is elsewhere as the performance achieved by Mathieu Van der Poel is extraordinary. The wearer of the rainbow jersey multiplies his successes and increasingly enters the pantheon of cycling. Firstly because he joins a very closed circle of four riders who have achieved the Tour of Flanders – Paris Roubaix double.

A historic double for Van der Poel

The last double was achieved by the Swiss Fabian Cancellara in 2013. The Belgian Tom Boonen also did it. He also retained his crown in Hell of the North in 2009 as Mathieu Van der Poel has just done. The Batavian signed his third victory this year following the Ronde and the E3 Saxo Classic. At the same time, he fills his trophy cabinet with a 6th Monument. He might well acquire his 7th wonder quickly. After the Amstel Gold Race next Sunday, the grandson of Raymond Poulidor will tackle Liège-Bastogne-Liège. A race that still refuses him but until when?
