The Wielerflits Site reveals this Friday that one of the partners of the Jumbo-Visma team would no longer honor its payments, which could cause a hole of 5 million euros in the budget.

In recent years, it had supplanted the Ineos Grenadiers team as the most powerful in the World Tour peloton. But the Jumbo-Visma formation is living through delicate days. From an economic point of view, at least, since on the sporting level, things are going rather well, with the recent victory of Primoz Roglic on the Giro and the yellow jersey currently worn by Jonas Vingegaard on the Critérium du Dauphiné. This Friday, the Belgian specialized site Cycling flash indeed reveals that one of Jumbo-Visma’s partners since July 2022, Gorillas (German company specializing in home shopping delivery, whose logo is on the sleeves of the runners), would no longer honor its payments since the end of last year following its takeover by its Turkish competitor Getir. The contract runs until the end of 2024 and the shortfall would be 5 million euros. A significant sum when you know that the budget for this 2023 season is estimated between 20 and 25 million euros.

Jumbo on the start next season?

Last week, it was the Dutch supermarket brand Jumbo which announced that it would withdraw from the team at the end of the 2024 season (it will also stop sponsoring Max Verstappen and the Dutch Formula 1 GP from the end of 2023) and that she was ready to give up her place next year if another big sponsor wanted to take her. “Sponsorship brought us a lot of notoriety, but now we have won everything there is to win. We invest more than 20 million euros in sports sponsorship each year, but I can only spend each euro once. We cannot return this money to the customer or invest it in sustainability or health”, justified the new boss of Jumbo Ton van Veen. Several international brands would have already made themselves known to the team leaders, who would therefore not be worried about the future of training in the black and yellow jersey. Remember that Jonas Vingegaard is under contract until 2027, Christophe Laporte and Wout Van Aert until 2026 and Steven Kruijswijk and Primoz Roglic until 2025, to name only the best known.
