A tunnel suitable for bicycles has been placed under the railway tracks in Groenendael, in Flemish Brabant, between Hoeilaart and Brussels. The tunnel, 30 meters long, was put in place in two days. Since Monday, rail traffic can once more pass on the tracks without problems, De Werkvennootschap, which is coordinating the work, announced on Wednesday.
The cycle tunnel part of the construction of the F205 cycle highway along the Chaussée de La Hulpe (N275) between the Brussels ring road and the border with the Walloon Region.
“With this tunnel, we ensure that, from spring 2024, uninterrupted and safe cycle traffic between Hoeilaart and Brussels is possible.“, declared the Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works, Lydia Peeters (Open Vld). “A connection will also be established with the De Priorij eco-recreaduct. Cyclists, like animals, will be able to cross the ring in complete safety near the Forest Museum.“
The F205 cycle highway faced a major obstacle: railway line 161, which connects Brussels to Namur. Thanks to the new cycle tunnel, cyclists no longer have to make any detours and will be able to pass under the railway easily and safely.
