The release of Cyberpunk 2077 on December 10, 2020 was chaotic to say the least… To say the least. With the exception of the PC version, which also suffered from numerous bugs, the RPG from CD Projekt RED did not keep its promises from a technical point of view to the point of being removed from the PlayStation Store. Yet month following month, update following update, CP 2077 has improved significantly and become a marvel on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Waiting two years to play it on PS5 was my best gamer decision and from afar !

Cyberpunk 2077 in a nutshell
Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person RPG (Role Playing Game) developed by CD Projekt RED and still to this day one of the most ambitious video game projects of the 21st century. It is above all the adaptation on PC and home consoles (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S) of a tabletop role-playing game imagined by Mike Pondsmith and extremely popular in North America. Indeed, when it was released in 1988, the latter democratized a sub-genre of science fiction… Cyberpunk… alongside the novel Neuromancer by William Gibson (1984) and Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott (1982). Just that !
We follow the adventures of a citizen born and raised in Night City, a free city located on the border between Northern and Southern California, both member states of the New United States of America (NUSA). Cyberpunk 2077 follows the events narrated in successive editions of the “paper” role-playing game and takes place three decades following the fourth edition entitled Cyberpunk Red which takes place in 2045. From a purely gaming point of view, CD Projekt Red’s title is an RPG with rich and intertwined gameplay mechanics, polished the universe abounding as much by its visuals as by its multiple cultural inspirations.
2020: A chaotic launch
Unless you have lived as a hermit or gone on a pilgrimage for the past two years, you are aware of the setbacks encountered by Cyberpunk 2077 when it was released in December 2021. If the PC version generated a certain enthusiasm among players , provided you hide the many recurring bugs, it was a whole different ball game for the console versions. Barely passable, but playable on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, CD Projekt RED’s title was a shadow of its former 8th-gen machines. The controversy was so strong that Sony took the decision to withdraw the game from the PlayStation Store for a time, a great first in the history of the online store, and by extension in that of video games.
The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 was delicate and the lack of communication from the Polish studios concerning the console versions before the release only accentuated the legitimate dissatisfaction of the players. However, ten days later, CD Projekt RED announced that it had sold 13 million copies (including 10.9 million dematerialized) of its futuristic RPG, the latter even being profitable on Day One thanks to pre-orders valued at 8 million units… a real tour de force. In the spring of 2022, nothing less than 18 million copies of the adventures of V had found takers. We briefly mentioned the PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One and Xbox One X versions… And the Next Gen in all this?
2022: Everything comes on time…
… to who knows how to wait. Initially promised in 2021, the Next Gen update long awaited by players finally arrives on February 15, 2022 and transforms a debacle into victory (some would say a little late). For simplicity, Patch 1.5 is a real boon for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners. Cyberpunk 2077 is almost unrecognizable and is (finally) becoming a title worthy of the new generation of consoles. Beyond the Performance and Ray Tracing modes, which are certainly appreciable, it is the city of Night City that emerges enhanced and becomes before our eyes this dystopia imagined by the author Mike Pondsmith and built by the artists and technicians of CD Projekt Red . !!! Spoiler Alert!!! I got a kick out of roaming the city and making V a legendary Edgerunner.
This sprawling and multicultural city with countless opportunities is now a street theater in which thousands/millions of citizens go regarding their business and survive their lives. What regarding the slew of bugs that can ruin the gaming experience? The cleaning has been done. The dystopian streets of Night City have never been so “clean” and stylish. So yes, I agree, console players had to wait 14 months to enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 in the best conditions on PS5 and Xbox Series. Personally, I took my troubles patiently for six more months, just to make the pleasure last. Don’t we say “The longer it is, the better it is”? In short, this RPG simmered in an oh so rich cyberpunk universe is now up to the hopes we had placed in it since its announcement in 2013. Some like to think of patience as a virtue. Cyberpunk 2077 is proof of that!
