CD Projekt has outsourced the translation of Cyberpunk 2077 into Ukrainian. The least we can say is that this new version did not please everyone!

The Ukrainian version of Cyberpunk 2077 brought his share of surprising translations to say the least …And CD Projekt had to apologize!

Anti-Russian messages in Cyberpunk 2077

The Cyberpunk 2077 update 2.0 introduced Ukrainian translation of the game, but it is far from being a simple, harmless translation. Indeed, players quickly noticed direct references to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Among the most striking examples was police dialogue, which originally read “Couldn’t all these assholes bite it out in the Badlands?” (“Couldn’t all these assholes sort this out in the Badlands?”) was changed to say, in Ukrainian: “Couldn’t all those rusnias sort this out in the Badlands?“. The term “rusnia” is a fairly recent Ukrainian term, which refers to Russians in a derogatory manner.

Another controversial dialogue originally read “We’re fucking through!”, which might be translated as “We’re fucking through!”. This line has been altered to read: “Fuck you in the same direction as the boat“. This phrase refers to the Ukrainian border guard Roman Hyrbov, who launched this scathing response on the radio to the Russians embarked on the guided-missile cruiser Moskva, who demanded that he surrender and cede Serpents’ Island in the Black Sea in 2022. This sentence has since been become famous, a slogan behind which many pro-Ukraine groups rally abroad.

We will also cite a pose for photo mode, which puts your character in a squat position, butt back. This pose is baptized, in the Ukrainian version “like a Russian”. In the inventory, we can also find another reference, in the weapon mods area. It says “Є перевага”, in in-game quotes, which means it’s a quote. It means “There is an advantage”. However, it is a reference to initiatives of the Ukrainian government under Zelensky’s mandate. Indeed, the government had launched the financial aid “There is support”, which offered compensation to citizens at the height of the COVID pandemic, the application “There is a missile”, which allows does anyone care to report a Russian missile launched on Ukraine, and the “There is a renovation” program, which manages the rehabilitation of houses and apartments affected by Russian attacks.

Additionally, a In-game graffiti features the Ukrainian coat of arms and a symbol representing Crimean Tatars superimposed on a rough map of Crimea. This of course implies that Crimea is indeed Ukrainian in the lore of Cyberpunk 2077. If officially, for the majority of the international community, this is still the case in our reality too, it must be recognized that it is also an unequivocal message regarding the conflict between Russians and Ukrainians.

Incitement of anti-Russian sentiment?

Obviously, the discovery of these references sparked passionate reactions among the players and the press. If most were surprised by these particularly divisive references, others were much more virulent. On the CD Projekt forums and in Steam reviews, from Many comments show Russians, like Ukrainians, complaining regarding incitement to anti-Russian sentiment. One Russian gamer even went so far as to accuse CD Projekt of “blatant Nazism and Russophobia,” calling for boycott of all games developed in Poland

CD Projekt issues an official apology

Faced with the controversy, CD Projekt reacted quickly by presenting his apologies on their Telegram account in Russian. The company said:

The Ukrainian localization of Cyberpunk 2077 contains several remarks that may offend some Russian players. These remarks were not written by employees of CD PROJEKT RED and do not represent our views. We are working to fix and replace them in the next update.

We apologize for this situation and are taking steps to ensure this does not happen once more.

Indeed, it was not CD Projekt RED which was responsible for the translation, but the companies SBT Localization and UnlocTeam. We know SBT for having worked at the localization of games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Darkest Dungeon, The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxewhen UnlocTeam translated games such as Subnautica, Valheim, Warframe …If we imagine that lines deemed potentially offensive will be removed from Cyberpunk 2077, this is not probably not the case for all these references. Graffiti, in particular, is surely not not the work of translators, but of graphic artists the CD Project.

It is important to note that CD Projekt has already shown its support for Ukraine on several occasions, notably by making a donation of 1 million PLN ($243,000) to an organization helping Ukrainian civilians forced to leave their homes shortly following the invasion. The company also has stopped selling its games in Russia and Belarus. This controversy therefore raises the eternal question of the difficult balance between support for a cause and the polarization of players.

Cyberpunk 2077 has just launched its 2.0 update, and its Phantom Liberty DLC on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
