It took three years for CD Projekt RED to rectify the situation and make Cyberpunk 2077 one of the best Action-RPGs of its time via update 2.0 and the Phantom Liberty expansion. Aware of the potential of their franchise, Polish studios are multiplying projects, both playful and literary, but not only, in order to exploit their science fiction universe. A live-action adaptation project has just been made official, and that’s not all!

CD Projekt RED did not wait until 2023 to extend the Cyberpunk 2077 universe to other media. The saga quickly set its sights on the 9th Art (comics) with several particularly popular comics which had the good idea of developing the lore while remaining independent of video games (and even role-playing games). In September 2022, the creation of Polish studios in collaboration with Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Star Wars Visions) enters the Netflix catalog and takes everything in its path. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a total success. The anime is considered (rightly) the best anime of 2022 by IGN and Crunchyroll.

The end of an era

The Phantom Liberty expansion and the 2.0 update that preceded it mark the end of development for the teams who have been working on Cyberpunk 2077 for several years. CD Projekt’s Action-RPG should receive a few minor updates (including 2.01), but that will be it. Polish studios are now looking to the future and intend to let CP 2077 die a beautiful death following having sold no less than 25 million copies around the world since its launch in December 2020 (figures from October 6, 2023).

Fans of the saga can rest assured, several projects have been made official by CD Projekt RED, some of them are even already available. The story of Night City and the cyberpunks can be (re)discovered in a novel, a board game and a live action project. Of course, a video game is also in development. It is currently known as Project Orion.

The novel

Science fiction in the broad sense, as well as the cyberpunk movement, were born on paper. It is therefore only fair that Cyberpunk 2077 returns to the origins of the subgenre in which it fits. In the West, Neuromancer published in 1984 in particular is at the origin of the themes, the atmosphere and the aesthetic which made and still makes in 2023 the success of cyberpunk. The novel written by William Gibson clearly served as inspiration for Cyberpunk 2077: No Coincidence. Rich in 488 pages and published by Panini, released on August 23, 2023, this novel by author Rafal Kosik (winner of the highest science fiction literary distinctions in Poland) focuses on a group of strangers who discover the true face of Night City.

In the sparkling Night City, a heist targeting a convoy transporting a mysterious container belonging to Militech has just been carried out. The members of the group of thieves have only one thing in common. They are being blackmailed and they have no idea of the scope of their mysterious employer, nor of the purpose of the artifact they stole. This newly formed gang – comprised of a veteran turned renegade, a Militech sleeper agent, a computer nerd, a therapist, a ripperdoc and a technician – must learn to outdo each other. to survive.

The board game

It’s a Kickstarter project that interests us now. Not recommended for under 14s, Cyberpunk 2077: Gangs of Night City is a competitive board game inviting 1 to 4 players to compete to take control of the illustrious independent city located on the border of Northern and Southern California. Launched on June 21, 2022, the crowdfunding campaign ended 15 days later (July 7, 2022) and was a real success with no less than 886,783 US dollars raised out of the 100,000 originally requested. Several expansions are planned to enrich the basic experience: Families and Outcasts, Gang Wars, Motor Pool and Side Gig

Players take on the role of ruthless gangs vying for control of the underworld in the glittering hellhole that is Night City. Face off once morest other gangs on the streets or online, as your band of ambitious mercenaries tries to dominate the criminal underworld that rules the city’s streets. Only the boldest will be remembered, and your street cred will pave your way to the top.

The Live Action Project

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a real surprise when it was released in September 2022 and proved to CD Projekt RED that there was an audience eager for audiovisual adaptations of Cyberpunk 2077. A year following the release of the anime produced by Trigger studios, to everyone’s surprise, Polish developers have formalized a live-action project taking their science fiction universe as a setting. Little information was communicated at the end of September 2023. The search for a screenwriter has only just begun for this Live Action which is currently at an early stage of development.

Anonymous Content is responsible for producing the future series or film stamped CP 2077. And that’s great news. The American firm – responsible for True Detective and Mr. Robot as well as The Revenant and Spotlight – is currently collaborating with big names in the industry on other projects (Shantaram with Charlie Hunnam, Time Bandits by Taika Waititi, Disclaimer by Alfonso Cuarón with Cate Blanchett) . Moreover, several industry veterans are involved including Chief Creative Director David Levine who distinguished himself with HBO on Westworld, True Blood and the first seasons of Game of Thrones. No release date, not even the format (series or film?) of the Cyberpunk 2077 live action project, have been communicated.

The new video game

You will have to be patient before you can discover the video game sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt RED made Projekt Orion official among several other announcements in early October 2022, i.e. 3 weeks following the release of the anime Cyber: Edgerunners on Netflix. And that’s regarding it. We know little regarding this new game in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, except for the studios responsible for its development and the game engine used. CD Projekt North America and more precisely the structure located in Boston has been working since the launch of the Phantom Liberty extension on the Orion project, which also runs on Unreal Engine 5. The Polish studios have thus abandoned their in-house engine, the RED Engine, for the benefit of non-proprietary technology.
