When it comes to video games, gamers sometimes have weird ways of protesting. This was the case, for example, with Mario Kart, such as the Place de la Concorde blockages or the grouping of individuals in front of Tom Nook’s shop in Animal Crossing. Away from Night City, Cyberpunkn 2077 players still expressed their displeasure for recent Reddit-related news.
What’s happening on Reddit?
In recent weeks, the Internet sphere has been agitated around Reddit: a website where many users discuss the subject of their choice. A real Roman forum in the digital age whose entries have been limited. Recently, the redesign of the official application has scared off many users, in particular because of its deemed untimely, to third-party applications allowing you to enjoy Reddit without commercial displays. Except that in May, Reddit decides to increase the price of these accesses in such a way that all third-party applications decide to withdraw to remain in good financial health.
An initiative that is far from unanimous. Among the various moderation teams, some explain that this complicates their mission, namely to maintain a healthy discussion space. It is in particular in a long open letter that they express their fears:
Many of us rely on third-party apps to effectively manage our communities. Let’s take the band-aid off right away: in many cases, these apps offer superior modeling tools, customization, streamlined interfaces, and other quality-of-life improvements that the official app doesn’t. The potential loss of these services due to the price change would have a significant impact on our ability to moderate effectively, which would negatively affect the user experience of our communities and ours as mods and users.
“This subreddit should have already been NSFW”
Despite this open letter, the official management of Reddit does not change its tune. Some teams of moderators then decide to use drastic measures: in mid-June, some forums are then dysfunctional. And for the past few days, it is in particular the channel reserved for Cyberpunk 2077 which has an ace up its sleeve by self-labeling NFSW. This English acronym, meaning Not Safe For Work, warns regarding the content it offers. Above all, it makes it possible to avoid bizarre situations in a professional setting. It is mostly gory or sexual content that is represented when tagged with the NSFW tag.
It must be said that Cyberpunk 2077 is full of content of this kind. It is even surprising that the title was not labeled NSFW, even at the time of its release in December 2020. But regardless, this has been done for a short time and allows the Cyberpunk 2077 channel to be ad-free. Something that is not to the liking of the management of Reddit, evidenced by the post shared by Tabnam on the social network.
According to them, the fact that your favorite subreddits become NSFW is too much for you to understand. The infamous Code of Conduct Mod sent us a message asking us to go back, because “you’re probably confused by all the NSFW content you’ve seen”. So we mightn’t explain that this is a subreddit for an 18+ game, and none of our content has changed. This subreddit should have been NSFW already, but we never thought of changing it until recently. Until we change it, we’ll be in violation of Reddit’s rules for the entire site. We’re not going to change it, because it’s a sexually explicit game, and also because they’re going to show off.
Out of support (or common point of view), Cyberpunk 2077 Reddit users have therefore started to share a lot of very explicit content. A very strange way of protesting, we will agree.
