Cybercrime: a Frenchman detained in Morocco risks extradition to the United States

Paul Raoult is a father engaged in a media and legal fight in France to prevent the extradition of his son to the United States.

The latter, Sébastien Raoult, 21, has been imprisoned for two months in Morocco. He was arrested following an Interpol red notice in a cybercrime case, particularly once morest American companies. According to his lawyer, he faces a sentence of 116 years in prison if convicted in the United States.

Incarcerated for two months

The young man’s father appealed to the French authorities. “I ask the Prime Minister to contact the Americans so that they stop their prosecution in America so that my son is tried in France and can prove his innocence“, proclaims Paul Raoult.

Sébastien Raoult is accused of being part of a group of hackers behind the hacking of data from large multinationals, such as Microsoft.

Moroccan justice “favorable” to extradition

The family’s lawyer denounces the inaction of France to defend its national. “The problem is that there is no recourse other than to beg. The only remedy is the way of Paul Raoult. That’s all, so it’s quite a tragic situation at least that the Minister of Justice answers us“, declared the lawyer Philippe Ohayon during a press conference in Paris at the beginning of August.

The minister in question Eric Dupond-Moretti has since explained that he did not have the possibility of intervening at this stage of the case.

In a decision rendered at the end of July, the Court of Cassation of Morocco pronounced a “favorable opinion” on extradition to the United States.
