Cyberattacks in France: the specter of escalation

France is the target of serial cyberattacks: deletion of websites, concealment of personal data and ransom, or even multiplication of false rumors. To date, critical infrastructure – such as in Ukraine, where a nuclear power plant was targeted – has fortunately not been compromised. But we must be careful: “The cyber weapon can be used before a ground intervention or to amplify its action,” recalls specialist Nicolas Arpagian.

Two types of cyber attacks must be distinguished: “On the one hand, those aimed at attacking the integrity, availability or confidentiality of systems or data; on the other hand, information fraud operations aimed at usurping identities, spread false news, and provoke social crises”, explains Nicolas Arpagian, author of “Innocence à Crédit” (Éditions Mareuil).

Physical damage is never far away, as we saw recently with the repeated malfunctions at the Corbeil-Essonnes hospital. And the cyber weapon now prefigures, or accompanies, a land conflict. It is therefore important to prepare for it by teaching about what the reality of the cyber threat may be in its different technical and informational dimensions.
