According to an announcement by the Ministry of Digital Governance regarding the cyber attack on the land registry’s information systems, the hackers failed to break into the Database, despite their efforts. It should be noted that there were more than 400 attacks on information systems.
As indicated by the actions of cutting off access and the diagnostic checks that have been carried out, the following data emerges:
More than 400 attacks were recorded on the information systems of the Land Registry this week.
Attempted but failed, malicious user intrusion into Database.
One of the backups was breached, but the attempt to export data (data exfiltration) to a foreign server failed. It is noted that the Land Registry produces daily copies of the database.
Agency employee terminals were breached, from which a total volume of 1.2 GB of data has been extracted so far out of the total volume of 200 TB held by the Land Registry, i.e. 0.00059%.
The type of files that have been stolen so far do not concern personal information of citizens, but standard administrative documents of services that do not affect the proper functioning of the Land Registry.
No ransomware has been detected so far, and the actions taken drastically reduce this risk.
How the hackers did the attack
According to Kathimerini, the cyberattack was carried out from two points: in the first case, the hackers stole user codes from employees at the headquarters of the Greek Land Registry and gained access to their computers, and in the second case, one of the servers of the IT system was breached.
From the first moment, all the competent state agencies have been mobilized to deal with the cyber attack, as well as a group of experts for dealing with such crises, such as the Directorate of Cyber Defense of the GHETHA.
