Natural disasters, attacks, epidemics, chemical attacks… Preparing doctors and more broadly healthcare personnel to intervene at the scene of disasters or to take care of a large number of victims within their own hospital, this is the ambition of the new XXL project. of CHU de Toulouse.

Called Sens, this 140m2 dome project aims to expose and train all health professionals through stimulation to the environmental, sensory and emotional conditions experienced in a crisis situation. Presented at the SantExpo show, which was held last May in Paris, this 3.0 simulation center will emerge from the ground on the Purpan hospital site in 2024.

For Vincent Bounes, deputy head of the Toulouse University Hospital emergency department and head of Samu 31: “Intervening on the front line requires optimal preparation to provide quality care to patients. The control of environmental and emotional conditions is crucial in the performance of teams, and in the feelings of patients and caregivers. Reacting to a disaster is good, but we have to anticipate how to react. »

To acquire a real culture of disaster management and collective risk, which remains very different from that of the implementation of individual emergency care, nothing beats training and training in real conditions.

A unique high-tech building

This is precisely the interest of this Sens dome which will be able to create the most realistic situations possible, thus stimulating all the senses (vision, sound, touch, smells).

It will also include a supervision room equipped with an ergonomic computer system allowing the control of environmental parameters: temperature variation (from -5 to +30°C), snow, wind and rain (up to 30 km/h), smoke or particular odors (blood, burnt hair, etc.).

Thanks to a library of environments (rural, industrial, day/night, interior/exterior…); of patients (age, sex, morphology); pathologies (burns, amputation) and care modeling (damage control, infusions, etc.), the trained personnel will be confronted with different scenarios depending on the objectives sought.

Therapy place for trauma patients

Hospital and pre-hospital professionals (Samu, emergency and security forces) will not be the only ones to benefit from this innovative project. The various crises that have affected the country in recent years have also highlighted the problem of adaptation and patient follow-up in prolonged periods of crisis, such as the pandemic.

This is why, in partnership with the psychiatry teams of the Toulouse University Hospital, the simulation dome will offer neurosensory exposure therapy for traumatized patients.

To carry out this project, the Toulouse university hospital center is supported by Cegelec Defense. Subsidiaries of Vinci Energies, the company participates in major defense and security projects, thanks to its skills as a solutions and systems integrator. Worth a total of €3.5 million, the future Sens building is financed by the Toulouse University Hospital and the Occitanie Region.

This project, which has obtained European co-financing, will receive provisional Feder aid of €3,049,242. “The forthcoming arrival of Sens bears witness to the Toulouse University Hospital’s ongoing commitment to remaining at the forefront in the field of emergency medicine”, adds Jean-François Lefebvre, its general manager. And to conclude: “This recognized expertise makes our University Hospital a leader in the field of medical disaster response, offering the population additional assurance as to our ability to deal with critical situations and to provide high quality care, even in the most difficult circumstances. »
