The postal service became aware of a suspicious-smelling package and notified customs and the police

Vienna (OTS) Thanks to the exemplary cooperation between the post office, customs and the LPD Tirol, a drug discovery was secured in Innsbruck in the summer. Postal employees became aware of a noticeable smell while processing parcels in a logistics center. They notified their customs and police colleagues with the suspicion that it could be a drug shipment. A customs service dog handler checked the suspicious package with his sniffer dog “Crack”. They found what they were looking for during the inspection.

Inside the shipment was around 1.2 kilograms of cannabis herb. The officers from the crime department of the city police command arrested the courier. A house search was carried out on the recipient of the goods and the handcuffs clicked for him too. A corresponding complaint was made against the suspects involved while they were at large under the Narcotic Substances Act.

“The arrest in Tyrol illustrates the excellent cooperation between the local authorities in the fight against illegal substances. The post office officials have made a decisive contribution here through their prudent actions. The work of our customs officers is crucial in tackling prohibited contraband, and our service dogs specialize in detecting cash, drugs and tobacco. Thanks to the excellent training of our dogs, we can ensure risk-oriented drug checks on mail,” said Finance Minister Magnus Brunner.
