Customs Officers’ Protest: Impact on Traffic and Removal of Compensation

2024-01-26 22:48:38

Thousands of people work in the zoning and this is precisely what the customs officers are aiming for: to impact as many people as possible to draw attention to the recent removal of compensation which provided them with a significant additional salary (we are talking regarding several hundred euros for some). This compensation must be replaced by meal vouchers, considered less advantageous.

Customs officers carry out very meticulous checks; both cars and trucks are stopped. During rush hour, the action has a strong impact on traffic. Lines quickly formed around the filter dam, growing longer than usual; even to the point that there were inconveniences and traffic completely at a standstill for several hundred meters upstream: an impressive number of cars stuck on the motorway have been reported since the rise of the E411, to the tune of Wavre, to the exit leading to the north zoning.

However, around 10:00 a.m., we learned that the traffic police had intervened to move the roadblock. Customs officers were therefore invited to move their action elsewhere, to streamline traffic and reduce the risk of accidents. They therefore positioned themselves a few kilometers further, near the Wavre container park: “when the traffic problems were noticed, we moved the control because the objective was obviously not to cause an accident” explains Philippe Sougniez, permanent UNSP.
