Curruchiche calls Canada’s sanction a “double standard” – 2024-02-24 02:28:35

One day after learning of the sanction against the Attorney General, Consuelo Porras, the prosecutors Rafael Curruchiche and Cinthia Monterroso and the Tenth Criminal Judge B, Jimi Bremer imposed by Canada, the head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity (Feci) responded that This is a “ridiculous” sanction.

“The donkey returns to the wheat, it is part of the double standard, of hypocrisy,” Curruchiche responded and assured that the sanction imposed by the North American country does not affect him.

“The sanction that Canada imposes on me makes me laugh. I have not traveled, I have no assets, I have no business in Canada. “They are absurd, ridiculous sanctions,” Curruchiche said.

According to Canada, the sanction against Curruchiche and the other three officials is due to their participation “in activities that directly or indirectly promoted corruption and for committing serious human rights violations with impunity.”

The sanction includes the freezing of assets in Canadian territory, the prohibition of carrying out transitions with them and the prohibition of entering Canada.

This sanction is in addition to those already issued by the United States and the European Union, which have a very similar scope.

“This is part of the hypocrisy that the European Union, the UN, the OAS, and the United States Department of State play with. They are upset because we unmasked what happened on June 25 and August 20, we discovered and made known all the irregularities of the electoral process and they did not like that,” Curruchiche said, citing the investigation against the Movimiento Semilla party.

The prosecutor added that he “is aware” that there will be more sanctions against him in the near future.

MP responded to the sanctions

Before prosecutor Curruchiche’s statements, the Public Ministry had issued a statement in which they described Canada’s sanctions as “a serious threat against the regime of legality and democracy.”

They also added that they consider that the action of the North American country demonstrates ignorance of the Guatemalan legal system.
