From Sunday, July 7, when the wholesale price started at 64.67 euros, until July 12, when it reached 190.13 euros, the wholesale price rose by 195.8%, awakening the “monster” of the energy crisis and the large price fluctuations. This is an image that is being questioned by the competent authorities and there is a related investigation by the Energy Regulatory Authority, mainly in the way producers structure their offers in order to control any speculative games on the energy exchange.
The jump in prices is attributed to the increase in demand seen. “The price phenomenon we have is a real situation that has nothing to do with the events in Greece” repeated, two days ago, the Minister of Environment and Energy Theodoros Skylakakis. “We have,” he emphasized, “problems in a series of interconnections with Italy, maintenance is being done on the Romania-Bulgaria cable, as a result of which Romania depends on imports from expensive Hungary and we export. The exogenous factor is the one that raises our prices. It’s something that can even be smoothed out within the next three days.”
The ministry is closely monitoring the course of prices, leaving open the window of subsidies that has been stopped since the end of December 2023. Mr. Skylakakis also stated that there will be seasonal fluctuations. That is why he said that the fixed tariffs that the providers still offer are significantly below the current prices. “Someone who wants to lock in these tariffs, which are essentially at pre-crisis levels, can do so today,” concluded the minister.
