Current: At 15 minutes per kilowatt hour in August 2024-08-01 00:02:35

In an effort to keep consumers from paying steep electricity bills after the “skyrocketing profits” of power producers, which were created by the very sharp increase in wholesale energy prices, the Ministry of Environment and Energy is bringing an amendment through which an emergency end to power producers is introduced.

The Ministry of the Interior estimates that it will draw about 40 million euros, which will be allocated to subsidize household electricity bills.

At the same time, through the amendment, the possibility of extending the extraordinary fee for a period of up to three months is foreseen. Its implementation for the remaining months will depend on the prices that the providers will set, but mainly on those that will concern professionals, who will not be subsidized.

In any case, by Friday the landscape will have become clear, as the ministry will announce the subsidies on the bills, to “scissor” the increases that may occur in retail, as a result of the increase in wholesale prices this month compared to in June. It will be preceded, tomorrow Thursday, by the announcement of the energy providers on electricity tariffs. After the subsidy, the average retail price is estimated to be 15 to 16 cents per kilowatt hour, close to July levels. The amount of the retail price will also depend on the size of the discounts provided by the energy providers.

It is recalled that the problem of increased energy prices, which Greece also faced, came mainly from the wider Balkan region. And this is because at the moment when the demand for energy in the Balkan region peaks, due to the heat, problems in the interconnections reduce the available energy. Practically, this means that the increase in the price of energy is due both to the current situation and to the high offers in the Greek market.
