Skip Yannick Schwaller’s Swiss ended the preliminary round of the World Championship in Ottawa (Canada) with a spectacular 8-5 victory once morest defending champions Sweden.
The duel between the Swiss and the Swedes, whose skip Niklas Edin is trying to win his 5th world title, has long remained balanced.
In the 1st half of the game, both teams used their last stone to score a point, before the Scandinavians managed to take a double advantage at the end of the 8th end (5-3).
With a masterstroke from Benoît Schwarz, the Swiss managed to steal 3 stones from the Swedes in the 9th end to take the lead 6-5. In the last end, Edin completely missed his last stone, allowing the Swiss quartet to score 2 additional points.
An opponent yet to be determined
The rest of the program for CC Geneva by Pablo Lachat, Sven Michel, Yannick Schwaller and Benoît Schwarz is still uncertain. They finished the Round Robin in the lead with 11 wins in 12 games and will have last-rock advantage going into their next game anyway. They won’t know their semi-final opponent until Saturday night following the quarter-finals.
