“Ok, which one of you explained to Migros that ice cream sandwiches work like this?” scoffs a user on Reddit. He also shares a photo from the first page of the Migros magazine. It shows various ice cream variations “to summer away”, such as fried ice cream or ice cream cups with marshmallows. The creation in the middle, on the other hand, met with a lack of understanding: ice cream sandwiched between two slices of toast and stacked on top of each other in triangles. Ice cream with toast? What’s going on at Migros, the users ask themselves. “I think they took the sandwich too literally,” says the comment.

In Switzerland, many are used to ice cream sandwiches made from ice cream, framed by cake or biscuits. “After all, Migros didn’t put any pickles on the sandwich,” says another Reddit user. Fortunately, the sandwich was “not completely screwed up”.

Inspired by Thai cuisine

On request, Migros confirms that the sandwiches are actually ice cream between two slices of toast. “Our cook was inspired by Bangkok, where ice cream is sold in bread,” says Migros spokesman Marcel Schlatter.

In addition to Thailand, the specialty is also eaten in Singapore and Vietnam. A Reddit user knows this too: “I’m pretty sure that sandwiches like this were sold in Singapore. Just ice cream between two slices of bread.»

According to Schlatter, it was not intended for people to make fun of it. “But we’re happy when it entertains people.” The Migusto cook developed the recipe herself. “It’s very simple,” Schlatter continues, “a slice of toast is spread thickly with ice cream, covered with a second slice of toast and eaten immediately.” One advantage of the sandwich is that the toast makes it less sweet.
