Peshawar Pathologists from Psychology Dr. Saeed Farooq is among the seven medical experts in the world who have been nominated for the Global Health Research Professorship research award by the British government’s National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR).
Apart from Saeed Farooq, seven researchers from Oxford University, University College London, University of Edinburgh, Scotland and other countries have been selected for this award.
In a conversation with Independent Urdu, he said that ‘this award will fulfill my lifelong dream because during this research I will have the opportunity to work specifically for the treatment of mental illness called psychosis among the youth of Pakistan. Unfortunately, these facilities are non-existent in countries with less developed and weaker economies.
Dr. Saeed Farooq is Professor of Psychiatry and Public Mental Health at the School of Medicine, University of Kelly, UK.
The press release announcing the award from NIHR said that the grant given under this award will benefit the people of less developed countries.
According to the NIHR, under this award, seven selected researchers will be given two million pounds (Rs 70 crore) for a period of five years.
The award will cover research in the areas of HIV, mental health, respiratory diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, and research practice.
According to Dr. Saeed Farooq, after this award, mental health centers will be established in the four provinces of Pakistan and in Sri Lanka, where psychosis will be worked on.
What is psycosis?
According to Professor Saeed Farooq, psychosis is a serious type of mental illness that is mostly found in young people and if it is not treated in time, the patient is forced to commit suicide.

He said that patients with psychosis die on average before the age of 25 years and during this research, facilities will be created for the prevention and timely treatment of this disease.
Who is Dr. Saeed Farooq?
Dr. Saeed Farooq hails from Swabi district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, received his MBBS degree from Khyber Medical College Peshawar and is now a Professor of Psychiatric and Public Mental Health at the School of Medicine, Keele University, UK. In 1995, he also founded the Department of Psychiatry at Lady Reading Hospital.
Dr. Saeed Farooq has written 250 research papers and founded Pakistan Journal of Psychiatry and has been its editor for nearly 10 years.
A study of mental disorders conducted by Dr. Saeed Farooq in Peshawar, ‘PM Plus’ has now been introduced as a standard by the World Health Organization. Dr Saeed Farooq is also leading a study to treat depression in TB patients.
