Curbelo: “Next year will be full of projects to improve people’s lives”

The president of the Cabildo de La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, has congratulated the arrival of the new year, setting social welfare as the main challenge for the institutions for the next twelve months. In his intervention, which took place at the Mirador de La Carbonera, in Hermigua, he reflected on the current socioeconomic situation and pointed to people as “the engine of political management.”

Thus, he appealed for optimism to overcome the consequences of a double crisis, the first caused by the pandemic and the second by the war in Ukraine. And at this point, he highlighted “the predisposition of governments to recover the economy”, a situation that he said, “must be the result of the efforts of all public administrations so that vulnerable people are not left unattended”.

He insisted on strengthening all measures aimed at the weakest and essential services. “That great challenge is what should occupy us most of the time. And we cannot neglect public services such as health, education or social policies”, she asserted, before stressing that 2023 “will be a year full of projects to improve people’s lives”.

La Gomera, a commitment to transformation

Curbelo detailed the progress that the island has made this year, with a clear allusion to the materialization of projects linked to the ecological transition and the commitment to renewable energies. “I am referring to a circular economy model, linked to self-consumption, the water cycle, sustainable mobility, the digitization of waste. A path of no return on which we work daily”.

He reviewed the importance of the social policies of the Island Council, with a commitment to efforts in education for the youngest; social health care for dependents; and employability for young graduates or people with difficulties in finding a job. “So far we have hired more than 500 people who are involved in various projects related to our environment,” she specified.

The people’s project

The president reiterated the commitment of the Island Corporation with the citizens, from the proximity and social response. “This is why I have no doubt that despite the difficulties, we will continue working as we have done since day one, with perseverance and responsibility.”

Lastly, he conveyed a congratulatory message to all Gomerans and, especially, to those who are off the island during these dates. “I wish you a year full of health, happiness and vocation to do things in the best possible way, and on that path we will surely find ourselves.”
